Do Emotions Age Nicely (DEAN)?

As human beings chronologically age we see relative declines in processing speed, executive functioning, inhibitory control, and working memory; however, despite the declines tantamount in aging older adults are much more proficient at regulating their emotions and emotional outbursts. The current project attempts to understand whether emotion regulation, specifically the suppression of negative emotions, is cognitively taxing to young adult participants between the ages of 18-30 and older adult participants above the age of 60.

To date we have collected data from 108 young adults and 91 older adults using the CloudResearch online participant recruitment system. This project is one of two side projects of the DARCI Project and will function as my PhD Dissertation research topic. In this project we specifically pose the research question: Does aging impact the effect of Emotion Regulation on Processing Speed task performance? The idea behind this research is that regulation of one’s emotions, especially suppression of an emotional response, is a cognitively taxing process that involves constant monitoring and updating. Thus, while suppression of emotions is occurring subsequent and concurrent task performance should suffer. Also, since as this is an aging study we hypothesize different outcomes for older adults compared to young adults.

This research project is ongoing and will data collection will continue out of New Mexico State University and online via CloudResearch.

My additional skills include statistical modeling techniques using latent variable and/or psychometric network analyses. I am also experienced in user experience strategy and research including A/B testing, rapid prototyping, and competitive analyses.
